How to start a crafts business

Hi there! My name is Chloe and I am the artist behind $100K Artist. Drawing on years of experience running my own successful arts & crafts workshop business, Creative Otautahi, I, along with my wonderful business partner Weina, have built these courses & coaching packages particularly with you in mind.

At the start, I didn’t have anyone to help me or be my cheerleader, but I made my business work, and learned a lot in the process. Now, I want to share that information with other creatives so that they can have the freedom that comes with making money while doing what you love. You don’t have to be an artist or business-person. The main thing you need to be successful is to be open- minded enough to give it a go.

Here’s how to start you own crafts business:

1. Craft Your Passion: What's your go-to crafty pursuit? Whether it's painting, sculpting, or something with polymer clay, brainstorm your favourite ideas! Read how to choose a craft for your workshop.

2. Scout Out the Scene: Time to snoop around and see what's cooking in your area. Check out other workshops nearby. What's hot, what's not? Gather intel on prices, frequency, and, if possible, crowd size.

3. Whip Up Your Workshop Plan: Now that you've got your idea brewing, let's crunch those numbers! Jot down your estimated costs and dream up your potential sales based on expected attendance.

4. Set the Stage: Lock down your venue and pick your dates. Sprinkle some magic on your workshop with a catchy name, a tantalizing description, and some snazzy Canva graphics. Read how to select the perfect venue for your arts and crafts workshop.

5. Spread the Word: It's showtime! Get the word out in style. Share the excitement with your inner circle, jazz up your Facebook post (maybe even give it a boost!), and drop a line to other local groups.

6. Rock Your Workshop: Lights, camera, action! It's your moment to shine. Prepare a killer intro, refer to your previously mapped-out workshop schedule, and get ready to wow your attendees!

7. Rest And Reflect: It’s all done, and the adrenaline is wearing off. That means it’s time to reflect: what went well? What didn’t? What did people like? What did you like? Sometimes it’s easier to strengthen your strengths instead of focus on any weaknesses, so keep your eyes on where your strengths lay, and keep going til you hit that $100K. You’ve got this, crafty bestie!
